The Troy White Collection by Enzo
We had just checked into our Airbnb apartment after a long train ride from northern Italy to Sorrento. After arriving and getting settled, we realized that it was late, and we were all hungry for dinner. We asked our host where we could get reservations at the last minute. He said, “I will check at the restaurant where I work and call you back if we can seat you.” Three minutes later he called back with the good news, “We have room for you now. It’s a 2-minute walk.” We were seated and ready to order within five minutes.
As we were leaving the restaurant, I looked across the small pedestrian alley and noticed hundreds of eyeglass frames displayed in an optical shop. After a lifetime in eye care, of course, I had to go check it out. As we entered the simple, small optical shop I was amazed at the unique styles and materials of the frames.
I was greeted by the owner’s sister who explained in detail how her brother, Enzo, hand-made all the frames in the shop. It was about that time that an energetic, middle-aged man came into the shop. His dazzling smile was made more intriguing by his cleanly shaved head.
He greeted me with the warmest of Italian greetings “Ciao!” and then settled in to explain how he had mastered his craft over the years.
He showed me the first frames I have ever seen made of buffalo horn as well as frames made from volcanic stone from nearby Mt. Vesuvius, the famous mountain that towers over the ancient city of Pompeii. My first thought was that they must weigh a ton but to my amazement, the volcanic stone provided a sturdy yet lightweight material.
